The only 20 books you need for JEE Main and Advanced

Walk into any bookshop in Kota, Patna or Hyderabad and you will find a wall of JEE books three metres high. Every one of them claims to be complete and as per the latest pattern. Most aspirants respond by buying eight books per subject, finishing two of them, and panicking in December. The students who actually clear JEE Advanced do the opposite. They pick a small, layered set of books and finish them properly, twice. That is the idea behind this list. Twenty books total, split across Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, arranged strictly from basic to complex. Each entry says what the book is, why it earns a place on your desk, and exactly how to use it. You are not supposed to buy all twenty. You are supposed to walk down each subject's ladder and stop when you hit your target.

The four-layer model

Every subject on this list follows the same structure.

• Layer 1, the syllabus anchor — NCERT. Defines what is in scope. Non-negotiable.
• Layer 2, the concept builder — one book that teaches you to think in that subject.
• Layer 3, the drill book — volume practice in the exact format the exam uses.
• Layer 4, the stretch book — hard, unfamiliar problems. Only for JEE Advanced top ranks.

If you are targeting JEE Main only, Layers 1 to 3 are enough. Genuinely enough. Layer 4 books are where good students go to lose six months. A note on prices and links. Indian edition prices move constantly and editions get revised, so the ranges below are for budgeting rather than quoting. Where a book has a "for JEE" adapted Indian edition, that is the one you want, not the imported original. Buy links are live search queries on Amazon India and Flipkart rather than fixed product pages, so they stay valid as editions change.

Physics: seven books

Physics is the subject that decides ranks. Chemistry can be memorised in a crunch and Maths rewards practice volume, but Physics punishes anyone who learned formulas without understanding them. Your book choice matters most here.

P1. NCERT Physics, Class 11 and 12

Why it wins. NCERT is the legal definition of the JEE syllabus. NTA writes JEE Main questions against it, and a measurable slice of every Main paper is lifted almost directly from NCERT text, especially Modern Physics, Semiconductors, Communication Systems and the theory-heavy corners of Optics. It is also the only Physics book on this list that costs less than a pizza. The prose is dry and the problem sets are too easy for JEE — that is fine. This book is not your problem-solving trainer, it is your map. How to use it. Read the chapter in NCERT before you touch any reference book: twenty minutes, one pass, no problem solving. You are building a mental table of contents, so that when HC Verma throws a hard problem at you, you already know which shelf it belongs on. Then in the last sixty days, reread NCERT cover to cover for the factual and theory-based questions. Watch out. Do not do NCERT exercises expecting JEE-level difficulty. They are calibrated for the board exam.

P2. Concepts of Physics, Volumes 1 and 2 — H.C. Verma

Why it wins. If this list had one book, it would be this one. HC Verma does something almost no other Indian JEE book manages: it explains physics as physics, not as a question-answering technique. The derivations are honest, the diagrams are purposeful, and the worked examples build reasoning rather than pattern recognition. The real magic is the problem grading. Each chapter runs Short Answer questions, which force you to reason without calculating, then Objective I, Objective II, and finally Exercises that climb steadily to genuine JEE Advanced difficulty. That gradient is what turns a student who understands the theory into a student who can actually solve. Mechanics, Rotation, Fluids, Thermodynamics, Waves and Optics here are as good as anything in the world. How to use it. This is a two-year companion, not a two-month read. Per chapter: read the theory, do every Short Answer question in your head, then all of Objective I and II, then all Exercises. Mark the ones you could not solve within fifteen minutes and return to them a month later. Finish HC Verma twice with honesty and you have a shot at a very good Advanced score. Watch out. Electromagnetism and Modern Physics coverage is thinner than the rest, and predates the current JEE pattern in places — supplement those chapters from P3 or P4. There are also no full solutions, only final answers, which is a feature when you are learning and a frustration when you are stuck.

P3. Understanding Physics, five books — D.C. Pandey (Arihant)

Why it wins. Where HC Verma teaches you physics, DC Pandey teaches you the exam. The series splits into Mechanics I, Mechanics II, Electricity and Magnetism, Waves and Thermodynamics, and Optics and Modern Physics, each relentlessly aligned to the current JEE pattern: single-correct, multiple-correct, integer type, match the column, assertion-reason and comprehension passages, all separated and labelled. Two things make it worth the shelf space. The coverage gaps in HC Verma, particularly Electromagnetism and Modern Physics, are handled well here; and every problem has a full worked solution, which matters enormously if you are self-studying without a teacher to ask. How to use it. Run it in parallel with HC Verma, not after it. Finish an HC Verma chapter, then open the same chapter in DC Pandey and do only the JEE Main level and the subjective exercises. Save the Advanced-level exercises for your second pass. Buying individual volumes as you reach those topics is cheaper and less intimidating than the boxed set. Watch out. The volume of questions is huge and a lot of it is repetitive. Attempting to solve every problem in all five books is a classic time sink.

P4. Physics for JEE Main and Advanced — B.M. Sharma (Cengage)

• Best for — students who want one self-contained series instead of stacking books

Why it wins. Cengage is the best single-source-of-truth option in Indian JEE Physics publishing. Theory, solved examples and graded exercises live in the same book, and the difficulty escalation inside each chapter is smoother than Arihant's. The Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetism and Optics volumes are particularly strong, and the illustrated solved examples read like a good teacher working at the board. This is the pragmatic pick for a self-studying dropper or a student without coaching material, because it removes the "which book for which chapter" decision entirely. How to use it. Treat it as an alternative to P3, not an addition. Pick DC Pandey if you want maximum exam-pattern drilling, or Cengage if you want theory and practice integrated in one place. Running both is duplication you cannot afford. Watch out. Bulky and expensive. Editing quality varies volume to volume, and there are occasional errors in answer keys.

P5. Fundamentals of Physics / Physics for JEE — Halliday, Resnick and Walker (Wiley India)

• Best for — JEE Advanced, deep understanding, physics for its own sake

Why it wins. This is the book undergraduate engineering programmes worldwide use, and it shows. The conceptual explanations, the physical intuition behind each equation, and the quality of the illustrations are on a different level from anything written specifically for JEE. Rotational Motion, Gravitation, Thermodynamics, Electromagnetic Induction and Modern Physics are outstanding. The Wiley India JEE-adapted edition is the one to buy: it keeps the original explanatory text but restructures the problem sets into JEE formats. How to use it. This is a reading book, not a grinding book. When a concept in HC Verma refuses to click, open the same topic here and read it properly. Two or three chapters read deeply will do more for you than a hundred extra numericals. Best used in Class 11 when you still have time to think slowly. Watch out. The original American edition contains topics well outside the JEE syllabus and uses calculus more freely than JEE requires. Do not read it linearly cover to cover, and do not start it in your final six months.

P6. Aptitude Test Problems in Physics — S.S. Krotov

Why it wins. Krotov is a thin book that will humble you. Every problem is designed so that brute-force formula application fails and only a clean physical insight works. There is very little calculation and a great deal of thinking, which is exactly the skill Advanced Paper 1 tests when it gives you a multiple-correct question where three options look plausible. It is also the gentler of the two Russian classics on this list, which makes it the right stepping stone before Irodov. How to use it. Do not read it chapter by chapter. Pick five problems from a topic you have already finished in HC Verma and give yourself twenty minutes per problem without looking at the hint. Solving two out of five is a good day — the point is the struggle, not the completion rate. One or two problems a day through Class 12 is a sustainable pace. Watch out. Solutions are terse and assume you can fill gaps yourself. Useless if your fundamentals are shaky, so do not open it before HC Verma is largely done.

P7. Problems in General Physics — I.E. Irodov

• Level — expert. The hardest book on this list
• Best for — JEE Advanced top 500 and physics olympiad aspirants only

Why it wins. Irodov is the benchmark of hard. The problems are multi-concept, multi-step, and frequently require you to construct the model before you can solve it. Students who have worked through the JEE-relevant portions report that Advanced Physics felt manageable by comparison, and that is not an exaggeration. The value is not in the answers. It is in the twenty minutes you spend deciding which principle even applies. How to use it. Be brutally selective. Solve only Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electrodynamics, Oscillations and Waves, Optics and Atomic Physics; skip the rest as outside the syllabus. Cap yourself at two problems per day. Use a solution guide only after you have genuinely failed, and when you read the solution, close the book and re-solve it from scratch the next day. Watch out. This is the most over-recommended and most misused book in JEE preparation. If your HC Verma exercises are not comfortably done, Irodov will destroy your confidence and eat time you needed for Chemistry. It is optional. Many IIT Bombay CSE admits never touched it.

Chemistry: seven books

Chemistry is the highest return-on-effort subject in JEE, and almost everyone under-invests in it. It is really three different subjects wearing one name: Physical is applied maths, Organic is pattern logic, and Inorganic is structured memory. You need a different book for each. That is the single most important thing to understand about Chemistry preparation.

C1. NCERT Chemistry, Class 11 and 12

Why it wins. NCERT Chemistry is not merely a starting point, it is the answer key. For Inorganic Chemistry — the p-block, d-block and f-block, Coordination Compounds and Metallurgy, plus Biomolecules, Polymers and Chemistry in Everyday Life — JEE Main questions are frequently traceable to specific NCERT lines. Students who skip NCERT and go straight to reference books routinely lose ten to fifteen easy marks. No other Chemistry book on this list can replace it for Inorganic: reference books add depth, but NCERT defines the boundary. How to use it. Read it three times minimum. First pass alongside your coaching or reference book. Second pass with a highlighter on every numeric value, exception, colour and named reaction. Third pass in the final month, reading only highlighted material plus every in-text example and exercise. Do the intext questions — they get asked. Watch out. NCERT Physical Chemistry numericals are far too easy for JEE. Use C3 and C4 for that.

C2. Physical, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry, three-book set — O.P. Tandon (GRB)

Why it wins. Tandon is the workhorse of JEE Chemistry. Three separate volumes, each covering its branch exhaustively with theory, solved examples and large exercise sets. If you want one author's coverage of the entire Chemistry syllabus in JEE language rather than textbook language, this is it. The Inorganic volume deserves specific mention: it organises the mountain of facts into tables and comparative trends, which is precisely what Inorganic needs and what NCERT's prose format does not provide. How to use it. Use it as your default theory reference for two years, one branch at a time. Read the Tandon chapter after NCERT, take notes on it, then move to the specialist books below for high-difficulty practice. Do the solved examples plus about half the exercises rather than attempting everything. Watch out. Enormous and occasionally verbose, with some content beyond the JEE syllabus. Buying single volumes is smarter than buying the set if you only have a specific weakness.

C3. Modern Approach to Chemical Calculations — R.C. Mukherjee

Why it wins. This is the book that fixes Mole Concept permanently, and Mole Concept is the foundation under half of Physical Chemistry. Mukherjee teaches the mole-ratio method, a systematic approach that lets you solve stoichiometry, equivalent concept, redox and volumetric analysis problems without memorising formulas at all. Students consistently report the same experience: three weeks with Mukherjee and Physical Chemistry stops feeling like guesswork. Electrochemistry, Thermodynamics and Solutions are excellent too, but the mole and equivalent-concept chapters alone justify the purchase. The mole concept is three conversions and a hub is the short version of the same idea. How to use it. Start it in Class 11, in your first month of Chemistry. Work through the solved examples with a pen, not by reading. Then do the objective and subjective problems in each chapter. Finish the first four chapters properly before you move on to anything else in Physical Chemistry. Watch out. It is a numericals book, not a theory book. Pair it with NCERT or Tandon for concepts. Formatting is old-fashioned and dense.

C4. Numerical Chemistry / Problems in Physical Chemistry — P. Bahadur

Why it wins. Bahadur is the step up from Mukherjee. Where Mukherjee builds method, Bahadur builds range: the problem sets are harder, more varied, and much closer to what JEE Advanced actually asks in Chemical Equilibrium, Ionic Equilibrium, Thermodynamics, Electrochemistry and Chemical Kinetics. Ionic Equilibrium in particular is a chapter most students never really master, and Bahadur's treatment of buffers, solubility product and hydrolysis is the best available at JEE level. How to use it. Sequence it after Mukherjee, roughly from the second half of Class 11 onwards. Do a chapter only after you have covered its theory elsewhere. Attempt the Advanced-level problem sets in your revision phase, not on first reading. Watch out. Overlaps meaningfully with Mukherjee in the early chapters. If you are short on time or money, pick one: Mukherjee for Main, Bahadur for Advanced.

C5. Elementary and Advanced Problems in Organic Chemistry — M.S. Chouhan (Balaji)

Why it wins. Organic Chemistry is learned by doing reactions, not by reading them, and Chouhan is the best-designed practice pair for that. The Elementary volume drills fundamentals: nomenclature, isomerism, resonance and inductive effects, acidity and basicity comparisons, and basic mechanisms. The Advanced volume moves to multi-step synthesis, stereochemistry, reaction prediction and the distinguish-between and product-prediction formats JEE Advanced favours. The progression between the two books is the point — most students who hate Organic skipped the elementary layer and drowned in named reactions. How to use it. Elementary volume alongside your first pass of Organic in Class 11 and early Class 12. Advanced volume in your final year, one chapter at a time, after theory. Keep a separate notebook of every reaction you got wrong and revise only that notebook in the last month. Read organic chemistry as a language, not a list is the framing that makes this practice stick. Watch out. Pure problem books with minimal theory. You still need Tandon or Solomons for mechanism explanations. Some answer-key errors exist in older printings.

C6. Organic Chemistry — Solomons and Fryhle, or Morrison and Boyd

Why it wins. These are the two standard undergraduate Organic texts, and they do the one thing Indian JEE books mostly do not: explain why a reaction happens. Electron movement, transition states, stereochemical outcomes and reactivity comparisons are developed from first principles rather than listed. Once you understand mechanism at this level, you stop memorising reactions entirely — you predict them. That is a permanent advantage in Advanced, where Organic questions increasingly reward reasoning over recall. Solomons is the friendlier read; Morrison and Boyd is more rigorous and more classical. How to use it. Selective reading only. Read the chapters on Stereochemistry, Reaction Mechanisms, Carbonyl Chemistry, Aromatic Substitution and Amines. Skip spectroscopy, biochemistry and anything else off-syllabus. The ideal window is the Class 11 summer break, when you have time to read for understanding. Watch out. Both are large, expensive and heavily off-syllabus in parts. Reading either cover to cover is a serious strategic error, and neither is needed at all for JEE Main.

C7. Concise Inorganic Chemistry — J.D. Lee (Wiley India, adapted for JEE)

Why it wins. Inorganic Chemistry is where most aspirants surrender to rote memorisation. J.D. Lee is the way out. It builds a conceptual framework — effective nuclear charge, lattice and hydration energies, HSAB behaviour, crystal field theory — so that periodic trends and their exceptions become derivable instead of memorisable. The Wiley India adaptation is the version you want: it trims to JEE scope and adds JEE-pattern questions, which makes an academic reference usable as a preparation book. Coordination Compounds, the p-block and the d-block are the standout chapters, and those are exactly the high-weight Advanced topics. How to use it. NCERT first, always. Then use Lee topic by topic to convert memorised facts into understood trends. Make a one-page trend summary per chapter in your own words; that summary, not the book, is what you revise in the last month. Inorganic chemistry: what to derive and what to memorise splits the two for you. Watch out. Do not treat it as a replacement for NCERT. JEE Main Inorganic questions come from NCERT, and Lee will not cover several NCERT-specific factual details. It is depth on top of a base, not the base itself.

Mathematics: six books

Maths in JEE is a speed-and-accuracy sport played on a foundation of technique. Nobody reasons their way through a JEE Maths paper in three hours from first principles; you recognise the structure, recall the approach, and execute cleanly. So the right book strategy is one strong theory source, a large volume of graded practice, and one classical text per weak topic.

M1. NCERT Mathematics, Class 11 and 12

Why it wins. NCERT Maths defines the syllabus and, unlike its Physics sibling, the Miscellaneous Exercises at the end of each chapter are genuinely useful. They sit a real difficulty step above the main exercises and cover several standard JEE Main question types, especially in Matrices and Determinants, Definite Integrals, Probability and Three Dimensional Geometry. How to use it. Do every Miscellaneous Exercise. Skip most of the routine in-chapter exercises once you are confident. Use it to lock down Sets, Relations and Functions, Matrices, Determinants and 3D Geometry, where NCERT-level command is close to sufficient for Main. Watch out. Nowhere near enough for Advanced. Calculus and Coordinate Geometry need far harder practice than NCERT provides.

M2. Mathematics for JEE Main and Advanced, five books — G. Tewani (Cengage)

Why it wins. If you buy exactly one Maths resource, buy this series. Five volumes — Algebra, Calculus, Trigonometry, Coordinate Geometry, and Vectors and 3D Geometry — each with clear theory, a large bank of illustrated solved examples, and exercises explicitly split into Main and Advanced difficulty. The reason it beats its competitors is the smoothness of the difficulty curve: you are never dropped from a worked example straight into an Advanced problem, there is always an intermediate rung. Combined with fully worked solutions, it makes self-study in Maths genuinely viable. How to use it. Make it your primary Maths book for both years. Per chapter: read theory, do every illustrated example with the solution covered, then the Main-level exercise. Return for the Advanced-level exercise in your second pass. Buy volumes individually as your syllabus progresses. Watch out. Very heavy in total page count. Trying to solve one hundred percent of it is unrealistic; aim for all of the examples and about seventy percent of the exercises.

M3. Skills in Mathematics, seven books — Amit M. Agarwal and S.K. Goyal (Arihant)

Why it wins. This is the surgical option. Seven topic-specific books, each stuffed with JEE-pattern questions organised by type. When you have one weak chapter and need three hundred problems on it, this is the answer. S.K. Goyal's Algebra and Amit Agarwal's Differential and Integral Calculus are the standouts and are widely used by coaching institutes for their exercise sets. The books also map previous years' JEE questions topic-wise, which makes pattern recognition much faster. How to use it. Do not buy the full set. Diagnose your two or three weakest areas from mock tests, then buy only those volumes and finish them completely. Best used as a supplement to Cengage in your final year. Watch out. Theory sections are thin and assume you already learned the topic elsewhere. Question quality is inconsistent in places, and there is repetition.

M4. Plane Trigonometry Part 1 and The Elements of Coordinate Geometry — S.L. Loney

• Level — intermediate to advanced, classical
• Best for — Trigonometry and Coordinate Geometry mastery

Why it wins. These two nineteenth-century texts remain the best books ever written on their topics for exam purposes, and JEE Coordinate Geometry questions still echo them. Loney's treatment of conics — the properties of the parabola, ellipse and hyperbola, chord of contact, pole and polar, director circle — is more thorough than any modern JEE book, and the problem sets build technique that transfers directly. Coordinate Geometry is a high-weight, high-scoring area in both Main and Advanced, and it is fully learnable. Loney is how you make it a guaranteed scoring zone. Conic sections: parametric forms save the algebra is the technique to carry into it. How to use it. Use Plane Trigonometry Part 1 only, and only the chapters up to identities, equations and inverse functions. For Coordinate Geometry, do the straight line, circle and conic sections chapters and the exercises attached to them. One chapter over a week, in Class 11 for trigonometry and Class 12 for conics. Watch out. Archaic notation and language, and no MCQs at all. A chunk of the content, especially Trigonometry Part 2, is off-syllabus. Use it for technique, then convert to speed using Cengage or Arihant exercises.

M5. Higher Algebra — Hall and Knight

Why it wins. Algebra is the largest single block in JEE Maths, and Hall and Knight is where its hard problems come from. Progressions, Summation of Series, Permutations and Combinations, Binomial Theorem, Inequalities and Theory of Equations are developed with a rigour that produces genuine problem-solving strength rather than formula recall. Many of the trickiest Algebra problems in Indian JEE books are, directly or indirectly, descendants of Hall and Knight exercises, and working from the source is more efficient. How to use it. Selective and slow. Pick the chapters above, ignore the rest. Do the worked examples first, then the exercises, targeting three to five problems a sitting. Class 11 and the start of Class 12 is the right window. Watch out. Victorian prose, no objective questions, and significant off-syllabus content including determinants theory and continued fractions. Skip it entirely if you are targeting Main only.

Why it wins. Calculus carries the heaviest weight in JEE Advanced Maths, and Maron is the best calculus problem book available to an aspirant. Limits, continuity, differentiability, application of derivatives, definite integrals and their properties, and area under curves are all covered at a difficulty that exceeds Advanced, which is exactly why it works as preparation. The treatment of definite integral properties and limit evaluation is particularly valuable, since those are precisely where Advanced likes to set traps — see definite integrals: five properties beat computation. How to use it. Only after Cengage Calculus is done. Choose one topic, do ten problems, and compare your approach against the given solution even when you were right. Two problems a day for the final year is a realistic and effective pace. Watch out. Contains rigorous analysis material well outside the syllabus, including epsilon-delta proofs. Skip those sections. Not required for JEE Main, and do not start it if your basic differentiation and integration are not automatic.

The books that are not on the list but matter more than most of it

These are not counted in the twenty because they are not learning books. They are exam books, and they are non-negotiable. Previous years' questions, chapter-wise and topic-wise. Nothing on this entire list will improve your rank as much as working through the last fifteen years of JEE Main and Advanced papers, twice. PYQs tell you which topics repeat, how questions are phrased, what depth is actually required, and where the examiners like to set traps. Buy one good chapter-wise compilation per subject and use it from the moment you finish a chapter, not just at the end. Take a full three-hour mock every week from the start of your final year, at the real exam time of day, in one sitting, under the same rules. Analysing the mock matters more than taking it: for every wrong answer, write whether it was a concept gap, a silly error, or a time-management failure. A two-year reading roadmap

Class 11, Term 1. Physics: NCERT, then HC Verma Volume 1 for Mechanics. Chemistry: NCERT, then R.C. Mukherjee for Mole Concept, Stoichiometry and Redox. Maths: NCERT, then Cengage Algebra and Trigonometry. Add-on: S.L. Loney Plane Trigonometry, one chapter a week. Class 11, Term 2. Physics: finish HC Verma Volume 1, with DC Pandey or Cengage in parallel. Chemistry: Tandon Physical and Organic, plus Chouhan Elementary. Maths: Cengage Coordinate Geometry, Hall and Knight selected chapters. Add-on: start Krotov, two problems a day. Class 11 summer break. The single best window for deep reading. Halliday Resnick Walker for Physics concepts, Solomons or Morrison and Boyd for Organic mechanism. This is the only time you will have to read slowly. Use it. Class 12, Term 1. Physics: HC Verma Volume 2, DC Pandey Electricity and Magnetism and Optics. Chemistry: NCERT Inorganic hard, J.D. Lee for depth, P. Bahadur for Physical. No new books. Absolutely none. NCERT Physics and Chemistry cover to cover, your own error notebook and formula handbook, fifteen years of PYQs, and two mocks a week. Revise, do not learn.

Budget planning

Money-saving notes: buy used copies for the classical texts, since Loney, Hall and Knight, Krotov, Irodov and Maron have not meaningfully changed in decades. NCERT PDFs are free from the official site. Buy series volumes individually as your syllabus reaches them rather than purchasing boxed sets upfront, both to spread cost and to avoid buying books you never open.

Five mistakes this list is designed to prevent

1. Buying more books than you can finish. Two books finished beat eight books started. Every time. Owning a book provides no marks.
2. Starting Irodov in Class 11. Difficulty is not the same as usefulness. A book that is too hard for your current level teaches you nothing and costs you confidence. Climb the ladder in order.
3. Treating NCERT as optional, especially in Chemistry. Skipping NCERT to look serious is the most expensive form of vanity in JEE preparation.
4. Reading without solving. Reading a solved example and understanding it is not the same as being able to produce it. Cover the solution. Attempt first. Always.
5. Starting a new book in the last two months. This is panic disguised as effort. In the final sixty days the only correct moves are revision, PYQs and mocks.

The uncomfortable truth about book lists is that the list is the easy part. Every aspirant who cleared JEE Advanced used roughly these books, and so did every aspirant who did not. What separated them was finishing, revising, and maintaining an honest error log. So pick your tier. Buy four or five books, not fifteen. Put them on your desk where you can see them. Then go and actually finish HC Verma.
